Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
