In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
